Teens Can Get Ahead This Summer With a New Popular Mechanics

Posted: 18th July 2017 09:30

With 3D printing, robotics and aerospace engineering driving technology these days, an exciting new program takes teen summer experiences to the next level. The Popular Mechanics STEM Experience, a collaboration between 360°Student Travel by Westcoast Connection and Popular Mechanics magazine, enables high-school students completing  9th to 12th grades to enroll in an immersive multi-week course to sharpen their knowledge and skills with real-world learning.

This July in Los Angeles, CA, leaders in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – including iFLY Hollywood, Hollywood 3D Printing, Sphero, Ryobi and RIDGID will join Popular Mechanics editors and other special guests for 14-, 21- and 28-day itineraries designed exclusively for high-school students. With the goal of inspiring the next generation of engineers, coders and innovators, teens will participate in hands-on sessions at each of these companies' locations, learning from the pros what it takes to go from idea conception to creation. Popular Mechanics has recruited passionate experts from all the STEM fields who will give students access to knowledge they won't find anywhere else: how to really turn dreams to reality using 3D printing, how robots like Sphero's Star Wars BB-8 come to life, and how to build anything using the best power tools.

"For generations, Popular Mechanics has shared cutting-edge knowledge with its readers about how the world works – and how to build and create whatever they can dream up," said Editor-in-Chief Ryan D'Agostino. "We are thrilled to turn that mission into a live experience that will connect tomorrow's leaders with some of today's greatest minds, teachers, and companies."

The Popular Mechanics STEM Experience also provides teens with a social setting, as participants will stay at UCLA's residences, attend college workshops and enjoy day trips to attractions in and around L.A.

The Popular Mechanics STEM Experience is the second collaboration between Hearst, the parent company of Popular Mechanics, and Westcoast Connection. The first was the Seventeen Fashion Experience, which immersed teens in New York City in a creative summer tour that allowed participants to experience all that goes into creating Seventeen magazine. Designed and developed by Seventeen's editorial team, this two-week program consisted of a hands-on journey through the magazine and fashion industries as well as the opportunity to revel in all that New York City has to offer. The program was so successful that it has now been expanded to L.A. alongside Popular Mechanics.
