Do Something Amazing - Volunteering at Lanta Animal Welfare

Posted: 19th October 2015 08:22

Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW), based on Koh Lanta in the south west of Thailand, has a mission to relieve the suffering and pain of the animals on the island through sterilisation and care.  Founded in 2005, the non-profit organisation is primarily a sterilisation centre, with the aim of reducing the suffering of the island’s cats and dogs by reducing their population numbers humanely.  Since its foundation, LAW has sterilised and vaccinated over 8,000 animals, and treated many thousands more.  The organisation also provides emergency first-aid and veterinary care to the island’s animals, receiving 50-100 treatment cases per week.

LAW currently has over 70 animals in need of adoptive homes – over the last two years, LAW has adopted out almost 200 dogs and cats to families globally.  The process is easy and LAW takes care of all the paperwork and logistics, but animals who aren’t yet adopted still need daily care, and that’s where the volunteers come in!

Volunteering at Lanta Animal Welfare

Volunteers are always needed to help out at LAW, and should have a willingness to commit to hard work and a passion to help the cats and dogs of Koh Lanta, Thailand.  A love of animals is essential, but LAW also needs people who are hard-working, motivated, friendly and mature.

Volunteer duties include feeding the animals; cleaning the cattery, kennels and general centre areas; walking, bathing and grooming the dogs; giving tours to visitors and other relevant tasks that pop up.  In the past, volunteers have gone on mobile sterilisation clinics to other islands, sold merchandise or mixed cocktails at fundraisers.

Working at LAW is a rewarding and fulfilling experience where you will meet plenty of great people and have lots of fun between the hard work.  Volunteers work one of two alternating shifts (7am-1pm and 1pm-7pm) so there is plenty of time off to relax, hit the beach and discover the other activities Koh Lanta has to offer.

Volunteers are provided with on-site accommodation – rooms are shared with the same sex and have two beds and a bathroom each.

The cost to volunteer at Lanta Animal Welfare is 5000 baht for the first month (just 166 baht a night – you won’t find cheaper accommodation!), 2500 baht for the second month and 1000 per month after that, if you decide to stay longer! LAW asks that you pay a 10,000 Baht deposit, of which the remaining 5000 baht will be returned to you at the end of your stay, providing certain conditions are met, e.g. not cancelling before you arrive or leaving early without asking, leaving the room in a poor state.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, visitors to the centre are still welcome every day between 9am-5pm, and tours are provided hourly from 10am-4pm.  Dog walkers in particular are very welcome as all LAW dogs are walked twice a day.  Lanta Animal Welfare is a must for all animal lovers in the region!
