Whether you’re planning a chilled out beach escape or you’re looking for adventure by day before hitting the clubs at night, you’ll need somewhere to rest your head at the end of the day. From cultural Valletta to the beaches and tourist favourites of St Julian’s or Sliema, these budget friendly choices will ensure your holiday gets off to the smoothest possible start.

Boho Hostel

Dun G.  Xerri Street, St Julian’s

Boho is situated in a gorgeous villa, around ten minutes walk from both the centre of St Julian’s and the beaches of Sliema, and around 15 minutes away from the pubs, bars, and clubs of Paceville. The hostel itself isn’t aimed at the biggest of party crowds – they don’t accept groups of four or more, so it’s best suited to backpackers and solo travellers. Think of it as more of a chilled out home away from home than a base for hard-core holiday-makers. Sit back in a hammock in the large garden and appreciate the social side of hostel life, chatting away with new friends from all over the world.

Promoting a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, Boho provides all the necessities you’d expect from a good hostel; free internet, lockers, maps, and all the advice you could need from knowledgeable and approachable staff. Communal kitchens and a large common room mean that it’s easy to get to know fellow travellers. There are short and long stay options available here – check out their website for details – and solo travellers will be pleased to find out that they have options that save them money as well.

Tropicana Hotel

Ball Street, Paceville

Tropicana Hotel offers clean, simple rooms.  You won’t find luxurious extras here but if you’re looking for somewhere to crash after a big night out, Tropicana is hard to beat. Located very close to all of the action in Paceville, one of the best spots in Malta for bars and clubs, you can also find casinos, a cinema, bowling facilities, as well as the main strip of restaurants, all in walking distance of the hotel.

Tropicana has its own bar and nightclub, a 24-hour restaurant specialising in Mediterranean cuisine, and the largest internet cafe on the island.  Air-con and Wi-Fi is available in the rooms. You can book tours and day trips, car rentals, and diving trips from the front desk. Because of its location in the main party district, you can expect the hotel to get a bit noisy at times, and the rooms are a bit on the small side. Let’s be honest, though; are you planning to spend your entire holiday in the hotel room anyway?

British Hotel

Battery Street, Valletta

The British Hotel offers clean, comfortable basics and a fantastic base to explore the capital of Malta, Valletta.  With a terrace restaurant where you can enjoy your breakfast with gorgeous views over the historic Grand Harbour and a small sundeck (with drinks and snacks available) on the roof, this hotel really is all about the location. It is ten minutes from the main shopping area of Valletta and boasts panoramic views over the harbour and the Three Cities.

Air-conditioning is available at an extra cost, as is Wi-Fi. Most of the famous sights of Valletta are within walking distance of the hotel, and there’s bicycle hire available for if you’re heading a little further afield. The hotel is a little dated, decor-wise; the British was chosen as the 1970s-style hotel location for the 2005 film Munich. Think of it as retro-chic rather than tired and it’ll take on a whole new elegance.

Shamrock Apartments

J Quintinus Street, Buggiba

Buggiba is located in the north of Malta in the St Paul’s Bay region, where you can find beautiful sandy beaches that are often quieter than in the busier Sliema region. It is one of Malta’s most established resorts for beach holiday. Buggiba is perfect for lounging on the beach or taking part in water sports or boat trips by day, and exploring the selection of bars, restaurants and clubs by night.

One of the best options for the budget-conscious traveller is to go self-catering. Shamrock Apartments are centrally located, being around an eight minute walk to the nearest beach, and ten minutes from Bay Square where there are clubs and bars. The apartments are available for short stays in the summer, or longer-term during the winter months. There is a communal roof-top pool, complete with sun loungers, as well as a sun-deck area.  If you’re looking for a no-frills beach holiday, Shamrock Apartments are ideal.
