Frankfrut-am-Main is a bit different to your average German city, a financial heartland of Europe with huge skyscrapers and home of the European Central Bank; it has earned the nickname Mainhattan. It may lack the instant charm of other German cities like Berlin and Cologne but this isn’t some cold, concrete metropolis though, in-between sky risers you can find some greenery, museums and great places to go out and eat.
Hardly surprising, Frankfurt airport is the region’s biggest employer, the third-largest in Europe, handling over 56 million passengers per year. This city deserves to be more than just a stopover for connecting flights. There are a rich collection of museums – second only to Berlin in Germany while there are also lots of parks and greenery, a lively student scene – which contributes to a great nightlife which varies from typically German cosy apple-wine taverns (Frankfurt is famous for its cider houses) to classic European techno discos. In-between all this there is typically excellent public transport, fine dining and plenty to do in the evening.
Many visitors to the city make a stop for the Dom (main cathedral) which dates back to the 14th century. Other highlights include the area of Sachsenhausen, which is a hub of pubs and bars tucked neatly alongside the River Main. During the festive season, the Frankfurt Christmas Market rolls into town is one of German’s biggest and best offerings of what they do best as a nation.
