Travelling To Alaska
Alaska is more affordable and less busy when visiting during off-peak months – like April/May or September/October which are called the “shoulder seasons” – when hotels and tour operators offer discounted travel prices around this time and weather conditions are more favourable.
There are a variety of ways to get to Alaska by air travel, railroad, highway, ferry or cruise but travelling between different regions can be costly and you can never see several places all at once so stick to one area which offers you the best activities and attractions that interest you the most.
Useful Things To Know
Alaska has very unpredictable weather, even worse than Britain. In the summer season one day you could find yourself basking in the warm sunshine with hot temperatures whereas the next day there could be torrential rainfall with strong winds so be prepared and take appropriate clothing. Be sure to take strong insect repellent as the Alaskan mosquitoes can be fierce especially during the summer so wear neutral clothes and avoid using strong perfume or deodorant.
Haggling is accepted in some Alaskan shops so take for example a souvenir – which you’d like to take home as a memento of your trip – seems too expensive don’t be afraid to barter down the price.
