Your Complete Agra City Guide

Posted: 12th August 2015 09:22

The ancient city of Agra is situated in the north of India, along the banks of the river Yamuna, and is most famous for being the home of the iconic Taj Mahal – one of the New Severn Wonders of the World.  The name translates as ‘crown of palaces’ although the enormous structure is actually a mausoleum built in memory of one of a Mughal Emperor’s wives.  The stunning site and its white marble dome attracts nearly three million visitors every year, but Agra also has two other UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Fatehpur Sikri and the Agra Fort – and countless other wonders scattered throughout the city, from temples to tombs.  Plan to stay a while here and soak up the atmosphere of Taj Ganj and the fragrances of the bazaars.  It is also the perfect place from which to plan a day trip to Mathura, one of the seven sacred Hindu cities.

Where to Stay

Located by the west gate of Agra is Hotel Sidhartha, budget accommodation with plenty of special touches to make you feel at home.  The hotel restaurant serves delicious home cooking, the 24 hour reception are happy to help you with any information or make any bookings you require, and the close proximity to the Taj Mahal more than compensates for the lack of internet.
