Why you Should Visit Niagara Falls in the Winter

Posted: 28th March 2017 08:56

Niagara Falls is one of the most visited places worldwide –  the Falls are amongst the world’s great wonders and one of the greatest waterfalls. Its stunning natural beauty attracts millions of visitors every year with Summer being the peak season. During the summer months all of the attractions will be fully operational including the Maid of the Mist boat tours, but expect high costs for parking and accommodation coupled with tourists everywhere. The Niagara region crosses the Canada-United States border and falls roughly halfway between Toronto, Ontario and Buffalo, New York. Most of Niagara Falls’ attractions are found on the Canadian side.

But have you ever considered visiting Niagara Falls in the Winter? The low season is considerably less busy but be prepared for the cold – it’s freezing and the mist from the Falls makes it even colder so make sure you wrap up warm. The Falls are spectacular in the Winter. The smaller sections freeze over creating impressive natural ice sculptures, and the rushing water from the Horseshoe Falls is covered with ice and snow.

And don’t worry about having nothing to do or nowhere to stay. As part of the Winter Festival of Lights the Falls are illuminated every night from November to the end of January. Many hotels offer discounted rates during the winter months so you can save money if you can face the cold. And whilst you can’t take a Maid of the Mist boat trip to see the Falls up close you can try the Journey Behind the Falls experience (the rates are reduced in the Winter months as well). This year-round attraction takes visitors 150 feet below the falls where a short tunnel provides access to two outdoor observation decks and two portals directly behind the Falls.
