Introduction to MozVolunteers

Posted: 14th December 2015 09:22

MozVolunteers works to promote development through education, healthcare and sustainable income generating opportunities.  They are a registered non-profit organisation and work year round to support development in their areas in the KZN Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa, and in mid-Mozambique.  The programmes on offer involve members of the local communities with the aim of benefitting all levels of society.  They help in a sustainable manner – not just by providing everyday examples of assistance, such as feeding schemes and educational support, healthcare services and infrastructure support – but also through the implementation of sustainable income-generating opportunities that enable beneficiaries to earn a living.  These programmes are particularly important for women and children.  MozVolunteers offer volunteer opportunities within their various projects that anyone can get involved with.

Volunteer in South Africa

South Africa is one of the continent’s greatest countries and there are plenty of volunteering opportunities to be found here.  Volunteers stay at Rivercroft Cottage eco-lodge in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal Province.  Accommodation is provided either in cosy Rondavel huts or shared rooms in the main house, it’s a great, sociable place, with plenty of opportunities to join in with extra activities, from meals at a local homestead, Zulu dancing, mountain horse rides, hiking to bushman paintings, waterfalls and pools.  Three meals a day are also provided, and they can cater for special dietary requirements too.

Community volunteering

This opportunity is available year round, and involves working in the Mahaque community with children, in conjunction with the local school and crèches, as well as providing home-based support for HIV positive, and elderly community members.

Volunteer teachers

Also a year round opportunity, volunteers must have/be studying for a university degree, TEFL certificate or be undergoing a teacher training course.  The programme involves classroom work at Beersheba school in Mahaque, working within their role model programme, and inspiring learners to take their education seriously and promote development in their own communities.

Sports volunteer

This is a group opportunity which is run three times annually.  Coach netball, soccer, volleyball, rugby and cricket, work with older people to promote mobility and through schools to promote general health.  You will organise leagues, games and matches as well as school sports days over a four week period.

Arts empowerment workshop

This is a unique opportunity that is run once a year.  Work with renowned artist Dr Gill Robinson and partner with a local woman for the duration of the workshop, promote women’s development.  Learn and share skills that provide local women with the opportunity to engage in the creative arts, with the aim of providing them with training to enrol in their “siyaluka” mohair and craft production sustainable income generation programme.  The programme runs for a two week period.

Drakensberg Mountains

Another base in South Africa is situated in Underberg, a small mountain town close to the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho and in the heart of the Majestic Drakensberg.  Volunteer within community development initiatives, with children, teaching, as a medical elective student, or join their annual arts initiative.  Share your skills with those less fortunate whilst enjoying new experiences.  Additional activities for volunteers to participate in while volunteering on a Drakensberg project include: cultural trips to Lesotho and the highest pub in Africa, mountain walks to champagne-clear pools and age-old bushman paintings, photography courses, horse riding and various weekend trips.  This is once in a lifetime opportunity to see the world from a different perspective and offer support to those who most need it.

Volunteer Mozambique

MozVolunteers also offer one volunteer programme in Zavora, Mozambique, which aims to provide support to households who have been enrolled in their programmes for numerous years.  Volunteers are provided with accommodation at Zavora Del Sol Beach Lodge, with shared rooms in beautiful beachfront cottages and local meals are included.  In your free time you can snorkel in the Indian Ocean, surf, enjoy scuba diving, or even learn Portuguese or the local language Chope.  In the mornings, rise early with the sun and work until lunchtime on an infrastructure construction project.  This may be digging wells, or building secure houses, classrooms or community buildings.  In the afternoons, work at a community school with children of all ages, teaching English, sports and life orientation, or assist women involved in the sustainable tunga (sewing) programme, which provides a sustainable income to 42 women.
