Eating out in Cairns

Posted: 4th July 2017 09:40

Cairns has plenty of cool, atmospheric restaurants and budget eateries to keep you going on the first leg of your Aussie adventure.  The seaside location means that the city has an exceptionally high standard of seafood with the majority of the best places situated along the water front.  Sitting in the marina, diners can absorb the tranquillity of magical sea views whilst enjoying locally sourced produce.  Seafood isn’t the only tasty treat available however, with Australian classics like kangaroo, emu and crocodile for the really adventurous to try.  For the most part however you will probably want to try something a little less exotic, so here are our favourite places to grab a quick coffee, have lunch on the go, or settle down for a filling evening meal.

Bang and Grind

Bang and Grind is a fun and friendly coffee shop that also does breakfasts and lunches to die for.  Speciality coffee and the fresh produce used in their dishes is the key to Bang and Grind’s popularity with tourists and locals – in fact the vast range of coffee they offer is unrivalled anywhere else in the city.  It is the ideal place to get a tasty breakfast before hitting the city shops or to take a relaxing lunch near the beach.  The freshly baked cakes and pastries serve as a perfect snack or dessert and the best bit yet – even backpackers can afford them!

Caffiend Café Art Music

Caffiend Café Art Music is a hole-in-the-wall café found just off Graffiti Alley, one of Cairns’ infamous laneways near the city’s main street.  Open 7:30am – 15:00pm, Caffiend only serves breakfast, brunch and lunch, but the amazing artwork alone should make visiting this eatery a must.  The café is particularly popular with vegans, vegetarian and coeliacs thanks to its inclusive menu and everyone else loves it for the great food and cool vibe.  Remember to bring your camera when you visit.

Pier Bar and Grill

As the name suggests Pier Bar and Grill is on the glorious waterfront and is reputed to be something of an institution in Cairns.  The wood fire pizzas are legendary and available to take away, and it serves some of Cairn’s famous seafood dishes.  The extensive menu is reasonably priced and, in addition to the main meals, offers a selection of Mexican tapas, lighter bites and sharing platters for those with smaller appetites.  The bar hosts an informal get together evening with live music every Sunday inviting guests to join them for a drink, or something to eat, or both – whatever suits.
